With a hand-drawn map and a childhood memory, one man unearthed a wartime legacy hidden for generations — and in doing so, reconnected with the family he thought he’d lost to history.

A secret buried on the brink of war
As Europe braced for the chaos of World War II, one Polish family made a decision that would echo across generations. With the Russian advance looming, they hid their most precious belongings near their estate, just outside what is now Lviv, Ukraine. They never returned.
The Glazewski family fled, their ancestral home destroyed, their treasure forgotten — until nearly a century later, when Jan Glazewski, the grandson of the original landowner, set out on a personal quest. At 69, armed with a sketch from his father and little else, Jan was determined to find what had been left behind all those years ago.
A map drawn from memory
Jan’s father had long since moved on from the war-torn homeland, but he never let go of the past entirely. Decades later, relying only on fading memories, he sketched out a rough map of the old estate — fields, trees, slopes, and a specific edge of the forest. “It wasn’t to scale, and it wasn’t pretty,” Jan admitted. “But it was detailed. And more than that, it was hopeful.”
Following the directions, Jan returned to the land his family had once called home — now overgrown, rewilded, and nearly unrecognisable. But the landscape still whispered of history, and the map pointed him to a spot at the forest’s edge that matched his father’s recollection.

What the earth gave back
With a metal detector in one hand and the weight of history in the other, Jan began to search. And then, as if lifted from the pages of a novel, it happened. A rusted box, carefully hidden beneath the soil, revealed a treasure trove of family heirlooms: gold jewellery, an engraved silver baptism spoon, and other artefacts belonging to his late mother — who died when Jan was only seven.
The moment wasn’t just emotional. It was transformative. “Touching the things my mother packed away, with her own hands, before fleeing… It was like a conversation across time,” Jan said. “It felt like completing a mission. Not just a boyhood dream of finding treasure, but a final request from my father. And I did it.”

More than just jewels
The items, now valued in the thousands, are not destined for the auction block. Jan hopes to exhibit them publicly, not for profit, but to honour a story of resilience, family, and survival. “These objects aren’t just things,” he said. “They’re fragments of a past that refused to stay buried.”
For Jan, this discovery wasn’t about riches — it was about roots. In uncovering the treasure, he rediscovered the people and the place that shaped his identity. A story once shrouded by war has now been restored, piece by precious piece.
And sometimes, that’s the most valuable treasure of all.
