Kim Kardashian recently drew criticism for sporting what seemed to be an exceedingly rare Hermès Birkin bag made from elephant hide in an episode of her latest Hulu series, “All’s Fair.”
During a Vogue Hong Kong interview with Soki Mak, the stylist for the show, a behind-the-scenes snapshot also exhibited the controversial bag during a fitting session with the 45-year-old celebrity.
Animal rights organization PETA pointed out that while Hermès has not officially sold bags made from elephant leather, the company did produce a limited series of these bags using the hide of an elephant reportedly poached during a safari in the 1980s. These bags are incredibly scarce and can fetch prices over $125,000 on secondary markets.
When luxury goods specialist Daniel Wesson (known online as @birkinjunky) highlighted Kardashian’s character, Allura Grant, clutching the notorious elephant-skin Birkin, Instagram reactions were overwhelmingly negative, including a comment from Ireland Baldwin.
“This is … Beyond,” Baldwin remarked.
The 30-year-old model and actress shared an image of the SKIMS founder with the bag on her Instagram Story, adding, “This is so disgusting and shameful. I don’t understand how these people are supported the way they are.”
A representative for Kardashian did not immediately return a request for comment from Page Six.
“Yeah, I draw the line somewhere :(,” another user commented on Wesson’s post.
“Love Birkins but elephant is another level. They’re like spiritual animals this can’t happen ,” one user expressed.
Another exclaimed, “Does this woman have no boundaries at all!!!”
Nevertheless, some defended Kardashian, pointing out that she had not personally bought the decades-old bag.
“I mean, it’s already made lol…why be upset about it? I don’t support hunting at all, but she didn’t personally request this bag,” one user argued.
The Kardashian-Jenner family is renowned for their extensive collection of Birkin bags.
In 2024, Kardashian listed her peacock blue Porosus Crocodile Birkin for sale on the family’s Kardashian Kloset website, with a steep asking price of $49,995.
