Judd Apatow, like many avid readers, might just have a bit of a book-buying issue.
“I’m passionate about purchasing books. Actually reading them, not as much, so I have thousands that I’ve yet to start,” he shares with Page Six, quickly adding, “But I’m determined to read every single one of them!”
Yet, for the filmmaker, finding the time to read them all is a challenge, as he often finds himself nodding off just minutes after beginning to read in bed.
“I might even drift off just thinking about reading,” Apatow humorously admits, also confessing his fondness for self-help books.
“You could say I stockpile self-help books,” says the director, whose latest book “Comedy Nerd” was released this Tuesday. “I’m always hoping to find that one book that will erase all my worries and emotional clutter.
“More often, I end up feeling anxious about forgetting all the advice that’s supposed to cure me, which just leads to more stress and public freak-outs!” he reveals.
Scroll down to see Apatow’s top six book recommendations.
“Born Standing Up” by Steve Martin
“The ultimate book on comedy and what it’s like to live as a stand-up comedian.”
“The Untethered Soul” by Michael Singer
“This self-help book is one I should read daily to stay balanced, but usually it ends up being every couple of weeks.”
“The Uncool” by Cameron Crowe
“Crowe’s new memoir about his early days as a young music journalist is absolutely enthralling. It covers everything I love: family, journalism, growing up, and rock music.”
“The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter” by Carson McCullers
“An emotionally touching novel that is a must-read for everyone.”
“Making Movies” by Sidney Lumet
“The definitive book for anyone aspiring to be a filmmaker.”
“Comedy Nerd” by Judd Apatow
“This is a memoir in the form of a scrapbook, filled with photos, essays, memorabilia, and stories from my life and love for comedy. I’m suggesting it only because all proceeds will go to Fire Aid for fire victims in Pacific Palisades and Altadena, and to 826 centers that offer free tutoring and literacy programs to children.”
