Julie Bowen Reveals Her Kids Just Watched ‘Happy Gilmore’ 28 Years After Release!

Update on :
“Happy Gilmore” Came Out 28 Years Ago — and Star Julie Bowen Says Her Kids Finally Watched It 'Just Last Night'

Julie Bowen recently shared with Sherri Shepherd that one of her three sons just watched “Happy Gilmore” for the first time, coinciding with the start of production for its sequel.

It has been nearly 30 years since the premiere of the golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” starring Adam Sandler, and now a sequel is on its way. Julie Bowen, who portrayed Virginia Venit, mentioned that her children had only recently seen the original movie.

“They’ve never watched any of my work before,” Bowen, aged 54, revealed during the Oct. 17, 2024 episode of Shepherd’s show. Bowen is a mother to Oliver, 17, and 15-year-old twins John and Gustave, with her former husband Scott Phillips.

“They knew I appeared in lingerie holding two beer pitchers – which is accurate, yet it’s comedic rather than sexy, somewhat goofy,” she added.

Bowen explained that her sons were enthusiastic about the sequel “because their friends are too” — leading to one of their friends finally persuading them to watch the original.

“Just last night, one of them saw it,” Bowen excitedly told Shepherd. “I haven’t received their feedback yet, but his friend shared it with me on Snapchat.”

While she couldn’t divulge her son’s initial impressions during the interview, Bowen laughed about how her son’s friend didn’t even recognize her in Happy Gilmore.

“He got [my son] to watch it and he enjoyed it, but he asked me, ‘Which one were you?’ ” she recounted, humorously attempting to mimic a scene from the movie. “He couldn’t believe it was actually me.”

Bowen has confirmed she will return as Virginia in the forthcoming sequel, where she and Happy, played by Sandler, are still together. Christopher McDonald will also reprise his role as the competitive golfer Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore 2.

New cast members including Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce have been announced, though details about the plot remain sparse. Despite having no prior golfing experience, Margaret Qualley is also set to appear in the movie.

Sandler has been actively recruiting celebrities for this sequel, although Nick Swardson, another cast member, mentioned that the final script is still being finalized, even though filming is approaching fast.

“It’s just so typical of Sandler,” Swardson commented.

Whether Henry Winkler, who has collaborated with Sandler on several projects, will appear in Happy Gilmore 2 remains uncertain. However, Winkler recently shared how he’s done last-minute favors for Sandler for minimal rewards.

“I did Waterboy. He called me late at night once. He said, ‘Henry, I need a favor. My actor didn’t show up. Can you drive to the park right now?’ ” Winkler recounted. “It was in Los Angeles, around 11:30 at night. I went, shaved, drove there, and sat getting makeup done until 3:30 in the morning. And what did I get? A cookie.”
