Although this young eagle had not yet developed the iconic white head feathers, her hunting instincts were already on full display.
But her chosen hunting ground wasn’t a river or a lake, as one might expect. Instead, her focus was fixed on an unusual location—a parking lot, partially obscured by a mound of snow.

Bald eagles are known for their prowess in catching fish, their primary food source. Spotting one in the act of hunting is already a thrilling sight, but what Gemmell witnessed next was nothing short of remarkable. The eagle had set her sights on an entirely unexpected target.
Gemmell raised his camera, snapping frame after frame as the bird descended with precision. From his vantage point, he couldn’t see what the eagle had grasped. Only later, back at home, did he uncover the curious nature of her prey.
“I wasn’t sure what she had picked up until I reviewed the photos,” Gemmell shared. “When I zoomed in, I couldn’t believe my eyes—it was a half-eaten slice of pepperoni pizza.”
A Slice of Life
For Gemmell, the realization was both hilarious and awe-inspiring. Bald eagles are renowned for their keen eyesight, capable of spotting prey from incredible distances. That this majestic bird had zeroed in on a discarded slice of pizza speaks to her opportunistic nature and adaptability in finding food.
“It was such a surprise,” Gemmell recalled with a laugh. “Seeing her talons clutching that pizza was not something I ever expected to capture. It’s definitely a reminder of how nature keeps us on our toes.”
Whether the eagle ultimately ate the pizza or abandoned it remains a mystery. Gemmell, however, cherishes the moment he managed to preserve through his lens.

As a nature photographer, Gemmell is no stranger to the unpredictable rhythm of the wild. “Things happen so fast,” he explained. “You don’t always realize what you’ve captured until you go through the photos later. Sometimes, you’re lucky enough to discover something as delightful as this.”
