On what seemed like an ordinary day, Gemmell was out capturing the vibrant hues of autumn when his lens focused on a striking bald eagle. Unlike the mature eagles adorned with their iconic white crowns, this juvenile still boasted a predominantly dark plumage. Nevertheless, her hunting instincts were unmistakably sharp as she swooped gracefully toward the ground.
“Nature has a way of presenting opportunities at the perfect moment,” Gemmell shared, recalling the swift descent of the eagle. His anticipation grew as she approached what appeared to be a typical hunting ground.
An Unexpected Prey
Bald eagles are renowned for their diet, primarily consisting of fish deftly caught from tranquil waters. However, on this particular day, the eagle’s target was something entirely different. Descending over a parking lot, she set her sights on a more unconventional meal.
Gemmell’s view was partially obscured by a snowbank, adding an element of mystery to the unfolding scene. Through his lens, he captured the eagle’s talons closing around her unexpected catch. It wasn’t until he reviewed the photographs later that he uncovered the astonishing truth.
“I didn’t realize what the eagle had grasped until I got back home,” Gemmell explained. Zooming in on the images, he discovered that the eagle was clutching a half-eaten slice of pepperoni pizza.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, bald eagles have been known to diversify their diet, especially in areas where traditional food sources are scarce. “I thought, ‘Wow. That is very cool,’ when I saw pizza in her talons,” Gemmell remarked. “That is not something you see every day, that’s for sure.”
Experts suggest that while opportunistic feeding can showcase the intelligence and adaptability of eagles, it’s essential to minimize human interference to preserve their natural behaviors. Dr. Emily Hart, a wildlife biologist, emphasizes, “Encouraging wildlife to forage on human food can lead to unintended consequences, including dependency and health issues for the animals.”
