Meryl Streep’s Recent Fashion Choice Echoes Iconic Film Role

Meryl Streep’s recent outfit choice could easily bring Miranda Priestly to mind.

Channeling an unforgettable scene from “The Devil Wears Prada,” Streep showed up on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” dressed in a cerulean blue sweater, finely knit from cashmere.

This particular sweater, a bespoke design from J.Crew made in collaboration with Streep’s stylist Micaela Erlanger, is a special take on a similar $198 sweater currently available from the brand.

Olympia Gayot, a designer for J.Crew, remarked in a statement, “Meryl turned cerulean into a cultural analysis, thus setting high expectations. That speech is so clever and humorous—it makes us realize that our personal experiences are actually part of a larger narrative, which is why ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ remains impactful.”

J.Crew’s Delight in Collaborating on Cerulean

“At J.Crew, our love affair with color began in 1983, so collaborating on this specific shade of cerulean with Micaela was both a privilege and a playful gesture,” Gayot continued.

When queried about her attire on the show, Streep nonchalantly responded to Colbert that it was “Annie Hathaway’s,” alluding to her co-star who donned a similar sweater during their characters’ initial on-screen encounter, with Colbert echoing a famous line from the 2006 film.

Reflecting on the “lumpy blue sweater” worn by Hathaway in the film, Streep, as Priestley, elaborated, “what you don’t realize is that this sweater isn’t just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.”

She then detailed how the color trend trickled down from a 2002 Oscar de la Renta collection to “a dismal casual corner where [she] undoubtedly dug it out of a clearance bin,” before reciting one of the most memorable lines from the movie.

“This blue signifies millions of dollars and countless jobs, and it’s somewhat amusing how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry, when in fact, you’re dressed in a sweater chosen for you by the people in this room… from a stack of ‘stuff.’”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” Promotional Tour Begins

The promotional activities for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” are just getting underway, and this marks the second time the notorious color cerulean has been highlighted.

Ashley Afriyie, who works with both Hathaway and Streep’s styling teams, recently posted an Instagram photo showing Hathaway in a hoodie adorned with a cerulean Pantone chip, labeled with “ceruleo,” the Italian term for cerulean.

In a discussion with Harper’s Bazaar, Streep recollected, “The first film was such an unknown back then,” noting “that fashion brands were initially reluctant to participate and contribute clothing.”

Clearly, the sequel faces no such challenges.
