There’s No Slowing Down for Micaela Erlanger

For Micaela Erlanger, the idea of moving slowly is unthinkable. Over the last few weeks, she has orchestrated an impressive lineup of 25 high-fashion ensembles for Meryl Streep’s global press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” Streep, a celebrated three-time Academy Award winner, has been a client of Erlanger for a significant period.

Interestingly, when Streep first portrayed the formidable fashion editor Miranda Priestly in 2006, Erlanger was just starting out as an intern at Condé Nast. This company is the powerhouse behind Vogue, which served as the inspiration for the movie’s fictional magazine, Runway.

Erlanger reflected on the impact of the original movie, telling Page Six Style, “The original film was an absolute cultural landmark that influenced the beginning of my career. Now, after working with Meryl for 11 years, to contribute to this legacy and evolve her iconic look for the sequel is incredibly thrilling.”

Styling Challenges for the Sequel

One of the toughest challenges Erlanger faced was ensuring that Streep’s outfits for the sequel paid respect to the essence of Runway without appearing as if she was merely reprising her role in costume. “We included elements from the film, but we were not dressing Miranda Priestly; we were dressing Meryl Streep as she presents herself today,” Erlanger clarified.

Erlanger has adopted a unique approach she describes as “meta dressing.” This involves fashion that references fictional elements that in turn reference real fashion history, all while considering the real-life persona and career of the wearer. “It’s fascinating to incorporate these ‘Easter eggs’ in ways that remain true to the individual’s identity,” she added.

On March 30, at her first tour stop in Mexico City, Streep showcased a striking devil-red Dolce & Gabbana suit adorned with personal brooches, including purple ribbons from her 2010 National Medal of the Arts and a rainbow rosette from the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors.

Later, in New York City, Streep appeared in elegant black Celine separates, accented with four distinct belts—a playful hint at the famous cerulean speech from the original film. Erlanger highlighted, “The focus was on power and authority, blending it seamlessly with femininity, representing a woman who is at the pinnacle of her career and exudes confidence.”

Erlanger particularly admired the red Prada pantsuit Streep wore in Seoul, noting the significance of the brand in the context of the franchise. However, her favorite was the Givenchy ensemble Streep wore at the New York premiere, complete with head-to-together leather and a cape, symbolizing a true cinematic return.

Ensemble Highlights and Collaborative Efforts

Other memorable looks include a blue satin Saint Laurent coat in Shanghai, a fringed Chanel skirt set in Tokyo, and a specially designed cerulean J.Crew sweater for an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” crafted from cashmere unlike the infamous synthetic blend sweater worn by Andy Sachs in the original movie.

To maintain a cohesive appearance among the movie’s cast at each event, Erlanger worked closely with Erin Walsh (Anne Hathaway’s stylist) and Jessica Paster (Emily Blunt’s stylist). They frequently discussed designers, fabrics, colors, and styles via group chat. “We coordinated to ensure that each client’s look complemented the others, reflecting the female-driven spirit of the movie,” Erlanger explained.

For the tour’s grand finale in London, Erlanger dressed Streep in a navy Richard Quinn sequined cocoon coat and a vintage Giorgio Armani Privé jacket with a striking red crinoline bow at the collar. But perhaps the most exciting piece for fans was a custom, crystal-studded Judith Leiber Couture clutch modeled after “The Book”—the pivotal, spiral-bound mock-up of Runway that Miranda Priestly reviews nightly.

Erlanger humorously noted, “We saved the most groundbreaking looks for the finale. As they say, the devil is in the details!”
