When AI Gets Toxic
The danger isn’t just in wasted time. According to internal documents reviewed by digital safety experts, Meta’s AI systems have allowed disturbing interactions with children, including sexually suggestive conversations. Other flagged issues include the chatbot generating racist content and false information.
This flips the usual script: in the past, platforms mostly struggled to moderate harmful content created by users. Now, the platforms themselves are producing potentially toxic content, blurring the line between innovation and irresponsibility.
The Risks for Children
Children are among the most vulnerable users. Psychologists warn that young people already face heightened risks of addiction, manipulation, and exposure to harmful material on social platforms. The introduction of conversational AI—designed to feel personal, engaging, and even intimate—amplifies those risks.
“AI chatbots can simulate trust and empathy, which makes them uniquely dangerous for children,” noted a recent report from the Center for Humane Technology. If these systems go unchecked, critics argue, they could erode boundaries that protect kids online.
A Bigger Question About AI in Social Media
Meta’s AI ambitions also raise concerns about misinformation. Researchers at the Stanford Internet Observatory warn that when generative AI is layered into apps used daily by billions, false or misleading answers could spread faster than fact-checkers can keep up.
For regulators in both the U.S. and Europe, this is becoming a pressing issue. The European Commission has already opened inquiries into how large platforms deploy AI without adequate safeguards.
