Nutritionists Recommend This Affordable Canned Fish Over Sardines!

Could there be a fish that outshines the sardine? According to this nutritionist, another budget-friendly canned fish might just be even better for our health…

Gone are the days when sardines were merely crammed at the bottom of their cans, waiting for the refrigerator to clear out! Despite not looking very appealing when it emerges from its tin, often in pieces, the sardine is increasingly finding its way onto our plates. Whether in natural form, in olive oil, with lemon, or spiced up with chili, sardines are making their mark in everything from mixed salads and bagels to croquettes (for those who prefer them hidden).

This popularity is undoubtedly due to its convenience and affordability, but also to its numerous health benefits. So much so that dietitians and other nutrition experts, who continuously praise its virtues, now classify it as a superfood. Is this justified? Absolutely. Rich in protein, this small fatty fish is primarily a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for maintaining good cardiovascular and brain health and are sorely lacking in our diets. If purchased with its bones, it also provides calcium and phosphorus, which help maintain our bone health. Its notable vitamin D content is also praised, which is essential for the absorption of these minerals. However, despite all these qualities, another canned fish star reportedly surpasses it, according to Laurence Plumey, a nutritionist doctor.

The mackerel, largely underrated, should, according to her, appear more frequently on our menus. “Nutritionally, it matches and sometimes exceeds the sardine!” she explains. Why? While its protein and omega-3 content are nearly identical to that of sardines, mackerel stands out with a vitamin D concentration twice as high as that of sardines. A single 100g serving provides 10 mcg of vitamin D, which meets the recommended daily intake!

What about the cost? It’s pretty much the same. When comparing the net weights of the natural versions from supermarkets, it turns out that sardines and mackerels are generally in the same ballpark. For the Auchan store brand, sardines even cost a bit more. Something to keep in mind for your next appetizer spread!
