The star of “Good 4 U” was notably absent from the 2026 Met Gala, even though she was in New York City and made an appearance at one of the evening’s after-parties.
On the May 29th episode of the “New York Times Popcast,” Rodrigo shared her thoughts on the event, saying, “I’m not really a fashion girl,” and emphasizing, “Really, I’m not a fashion girl.”
The podcast host Jon Caramanica responded, “Honestly, a lot of attendees at the Met Gala aren’t necessarily fashion people either.”
Deliberating over her career and choices, Rodrigo mentioned, “This is my third album, and I no longer feel obligated to participate in activities that don’t bring me joy, inspire me, or align with my values.”
She further explained that such events don’t excite her as they once did and agreed with host Joe Santagato that she now feels empowered to make more selective choices in her career.
Although the 23-year-old has been to the Met Gala three times, this year she only attended the Saint Laurent after-party, where she was seen in a vintage Vivienne Westwood minidress. Her last appearance on the Met steps was in 2023 clad in a black-and-white gown adorned with rosette trimmings by Thom Browne.
Despite asserting she’s not invested in fashion, Rodrigo has recently become the subject of a debate regarding the babydoll dresses she’s worn during her tour titled “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love.”
Also on the NYTimes podcast, Rodrigo commented on her stage attire, “I didn’t think I looked sexy at all. I thought it was so cool. I felt like I was channeling Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, some of my heroes.”
She starkly added, “It just shows how normalized pedophilia is in our culture,” ending the discussion on a provocative note.
