Olivia Rodrigo Stands Up Against Fashion Critics

Olivia Rodrigo refuses to be criticized for her fashion choices.

The 23-year-old “good 4 u” artist expressed her discomfort with the online comments about her choice of babydoll dresses during a segment on the New York Times’ “Popcast.” She found it troubling that some people sexualized her attire, which was fully modest. “I didn’t think that I looked sexy in that at all. I thought it was very cool. It made me feel like I was channeling Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, some of my biggest inspirations from the ’90s riot grrrl scene,” Rodrigo explained.

Addressing Cultural Norms and Misinterpretations

Rodrigo went further to discuss how such reactions reflect deeper societal issues. “It just goes to show how normalized pedophilia has become in our society,” she stated.

The debate started when Rodrigo appeared in a light blue Chloé outfit complete with bloomers in her “Drop Dead” music video and wore a floral Génération78 top altered into a babydoll dress during a live performance in Barcelona for Spotify’s Billions Club. Footage of her crawling on stage and unintentionally showing her ruffled bloomers during the performance of her song “Brutal” spurred critical online comments. The track itself deals with how society exploits young women. Some viewers labeled her appearance as “pedo bait” and compared her to dressing like a child. References were made to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and “Lolita,” a novel about an older man obsessed with a young girl, further fueling the controversy.

Highlighting the Double Standards

The award-winning singer highlighted the hypocrisy in the reactions, contrasting the babydoll dress to more revealing outfits she has worn without receiving such backlash. “I’ve performed in a sparkly bra and shorts before, feeling cool and comfortable, without any inappropriate comments. Yet, wearing a conservative, supposedly child-like dress drew criticism,” she remarked.

Rodrigo believes that altering one’s dress sense due to fear of misinterpretation is an overreaction. “If we start changing our style because we’re afraid some creep might find it attractive in a disturbing way, then we’re really missing the point,” she added.

While some speculate whether the outrage is a part of a targeted attack similar to recent online campaigns against other artists, no evidence has surfaced confirming such a scheme against Rodrigo.

Amidst the ongoing discussions, Rodrigo is gearing up for the release of her third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” scheduled for June 12, followed by her 65-date Unraveled Tour starting September 25.
