Interestingly, it wasn’t Barrymore herself who brought it back.
While filming “The Drew Barrymore Show” in New York City on a Thursday, Barrymore noticed a woman in the audience who captured her attention. The woman was seated in the front row, donning a black mini dress adorned with purple rosettes at the neckline.
A video posted on Instagram shows Barrymore approaching the young woman to talk.
“Did you know that this dress and I have a bit of a history?” Barrymore inquired.
“I do,” responded the fan, who introduced herself as Ruby. “My mom and I love vintage fashion… she owned this dress back in the ‘90s.”
“I love collecting pieces that have personal significance,” Ruby added, “this is my tribute to you today.”
Barrymore, visibly moved, replied, “I’m so honored!”
“When I first saw you today, I thought, ‘Wow, that looks just like the Betsey Johnson dress I wore to the Oscars,'” Barrymore recounted.
Barrymore had attended the 1989 Academy Awards at the young age of 14, wearing a black cotton off-the-shoulder Betsey Johnson dress, which featured two purple rosettes on either side of its neckline. She was accompanied by Corey Feldman, who was her boyfriend at the time and a fellow child star.
Barrymore shared with her audience, “Back then, I didn’t have much money, no stylist, nothing. I just picked that Betsey Johnson dress off a rack at home and wore it to the Oscars.”
The actress continued, “I absolutely loved it! It’s so thrilling to relive this moment with you, Ruby.”
In a 2023 episode of her show, Feldman appeared as a guest, and they reminisced about their past relationship, including their time at the Academy Awards.
Barrymore humorously recalled the event, saying, “I just threw on a cotton Betsey Johnson dress, straight off the rack. It probably cost around $65. I remember arriving and seeing everyone in such fancy designer outfits, and I thought, ‘Oh my, I’m very underdressed. I’m just in a simple cotton dress. Whoops!’”
As a beloved ‘90s fashion icon, we all hope Barrymore still has that Betsey Johnson dress in her collection—it’s never too late for a fashion encore!
