Parents’ Common Habit on Road Trips Poses Serious Risks, Pediatricians Warn
It’s a common scenario during long car journeys with children—parents trying to keep their little ones entertained and quiet. But a seemingly harmless act could be putting children’s safety at risk, pediatricians caution.

When stuck in their car seats for extended periods, especially during holiday road trips or weekend getaways, children can quickly grow restless. Parents often resort to various tactics to keep the peace: singing songs, playing games, solving riddles, or handing over a tablet to older children. These strategies are sometimes essential for parental sanity, especially as the miles drag on and fatigue sets in. However, one typical gesture can actually endanger the children.
Many parents may not realize the danger in the moment. They’re just trying to appease a little hunger or stick to snack time routines by handing back a cookie, a juice box, a piece of fruit, or a slice of bread while on the move. This ordinary response, however, could lead to tragedy. The issue here isn’t about sibling squabbles or envy over unequal shares; it’s about a genuine safety risk.
Pediatricians largely agree on this danger: there is a real risk of choking. Dr. Niky, known on Instagram as @niky.mamamd, released a video to alert parents. “In a moving vehicle, you might not notice or see the signs of choking in time to respond. And even if you do realize what’s happening right away, the time it takes to safely stop the car, get the child out of the car seat, and start emergency procedures is often too long”, she explains. The outcomes can be severe for the child.
“Without oxygen, a child can lose consciousness in less than a minute, and irreversible brain damage or even death can occur in just about four minutes”, the pediatrician adds. Such emergencies can also endanger other passengers, particularly if the driver reacts abruptly or loses control of the vehicle while trying to assist the child. To prevent such tragedies, it is strongly advised to pause at a rest area to feed children and to stay close by while they eat in case they need help.
