Just checking the expiration date on spices isn’t enough! To determine if they are still good to use, there is a more reliable indicator to check…

When was that bottle of ground nutmeg last used? Probably last fall when you tried to make grandma’s pumpkin casserole. And the turmeric? That might date back to your brief “golden latte” phase, which was about two years ago but lasted only a couple of days. As for the rest—paprika, cinnamon, ginger, cumin, and ras el hanout—they’re a blur. These are nearly single-use condiments, or ones that won’t see the light of day anytime soon, but you keep them just in case you need them for future cooking experiments.

As long as the spices haven’t passed their expiration date, which is often quite generous, everything seems fine. But remember, this date is a “best before” date (BBE), not a “use by” date, which is typically found on perishable items. At worst, the spices might lose some of their strength or flavor, but they won’t poison you, right?

Be cautious. Reality might be more complicated, as explained by the hosts of “Le Mag de la Santé” on France 5. “Even though spices have a longer shelf life than many ingredients, that doesn’t mean they can be kept indefinitely!” they noted in a post. It’s important to know that in an opened container, microscopic fungi (mycelium) can easily grow, producing molds that release toxins, which can be harmful to health if consumed frequently.

Luckily, there is a simple and reliable test to check their condition visually: just shake the container! If the spices flutter freely inside, they’re fine. However, if they clump together, it’s a red flag: you should dispose of them promptly.

To optimize their shelf life and reduce waste, the best practice is to grind spices yourself or, alternatively, buy them in bulk as needed. Ultimately, even if their “best before” date seems far off, spices can degrade in quality and become risky if not stored properly. A visual check is all it takes to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
