On September 16, 2025, the legendary Robert Redford passed away at the age of 89. During the 1970s, it was rumored that the actor had a particular fondness for a fragrance from a renowned French house. Let’s delve into the details.
A cinematic giant has left us. Celebrated for his roles in All the President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Robert Redford died at the age of 89. A passionate lover of film, he was an actor, director, producer, and promoter of independent cinema, as well as an environmental activist. Comfortable in his era, in the 1970s he reportedly fell for one of the most cutting-edge perfumes of the time. Crafted by a major French house, this fragrance was sensual, masculine, and leathery, and it also captivated other actors like Richard Gere and Sean Connery.
At the height of his career, becoming one of Hollywood’s top-grossing actors in the 1970s, he shared some personal insights with the media. According to the fragrance-focused website Passion Parfums, Robert Redford revealed that he was a big fan of Guerlain’s Habit Rouge. Launched in 1965, this perfume was Jean-Paul Guerlain’s first creation and has a unique backstory: while walking in the Rambouillet forest, the French house’s heir encountered a rider in a red coat. Mesmerized by the scent he emitted, Jean-Paul Guerlain set out to replicate it precisely using his ability to identify over 3000 different olfactory nuances. The result was one of the brand’s biggest hits: Habit Rouge, named in tribute to the attire of the man who inspired it.
The fragrance is considered the first oriental scent for men. At its inception, it blended citrus notes with patchouli, cedarwood, cinnamon, vanilla, amber, benzoin, and leather. It’s a robust scent that is powerful yet not overwhelming, as well as sensual and comforting. Since the 1960s, it has been reformulated and modernized while still retaining its original essence.
Yet, Habit Rouge was not the only fragrance dear to Robert Redford’s heart. He also expressed his fondness for several scents from the Franco-British house Creed, including Green Irish Tweed. This shows that he had a taste not only for great roles but for great perfumes as well.
