The 52-year-old actress, nominated for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role, will miss the event scheduled at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, which will be streamed on Netflix at 8 p.m. EST on February 23.
Despite the current backlash, Gascón plans to travel to Los Angeles for the Oscars on March 2, as confirmed by her close associates.
The actress has faced significant criticism after old tweets, deemed racist and anti-Muslim, resurfaced online.
Gascón has been noticeably absent from several award ceremonies this season, including the Critics Choice Awards, PGA Awards, Goya Awards, and recently the BAFTAs in London, where she was up for Leading Actress.
At the BAFTAs, Gascón missed the opportunity to see her co-star Zoe Saldaña deliver a spirited acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress and director Jacques Audiard win the award for Best Film Not in the English Language. Gascón, the first openly trans actress nominated for a BAFTA Film Award, instead spent time in Milan, Italy, with supportive friends such as Italian director Stefania Rossella Grassi and producer Melina Arena.
“Karla has been a long-time friend,” Grassi, who directed Gascón in the 2019 short film “Preludio,” shared with Page Six. “She possesses both strength and sensitivity, remarkable talent, and a boundless heart. She has always stood by me during tough times.
“It was comforting for her to be surrounded by loved ones, those who truly know her generous nature,” Grassi added. “I am hopeful that she will receive a warm reception in America on Oscar night, supported by fellow directors who appreciate her talent and character.”
Representatives for Gascón and Netflix were contacted for comments by Page Six.
Despite not sponsoring Gascón’s travel from Spain for the awards-season campaigning amid the social media fallout, Netflix has previously promoted her through a New York Times advertisement and billboards on Sunset Boulevard.
With 13 Oscar nominations for “Emilia Pérez,” including Best Picture, Netflix continues to see success this awards season.
Following the backlash, Gascón deleted her X account due to controversial past tweets, including derogatory remarks about George Floyd and calling her “Emilia Pérez” co-star Selena Gomez a “rich rat” before they had met. She has since apologized, expressing deep regret for the hurt her words have caused, especially as a member of a marginalized group.
Support from Peers at the BAFTAs
During the BAFTAs, director Audiard publicly showed support for Gascón, concluding his acceptance speech with a personal acknowledgment: “I also thank you, Karla Sofía, who I kiss.”
Saldaña also expressed gratitude towards Gascón in her BAFTA speech, highlighting the impact of their film. “I want to thank my wonderful cast, Karla, Selena, Adriana… Films are meant to touch hearts and provoke thought. I truly hope that ‘Emilia Pérez’ has achieved this, because it’s crucial that these voices are heard,” Saldaña said.
