Have you ever thought that a scent could make you more appealing to others? That’s the case with this molecule found in many perfumes.
Scents wield powerful influences. Some are reassuring, calming, mood-enhancing, or can even provoke disgust. Essentially, they have a profound impact on our emotions. In the world of perfumery, there exists a molecule reputed to make people more attractive to others. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s not magic; it’s science! Popularized by Dior’s Eau Sauvage in 1966, it is now one of the most utilized ingredients by perfumers around the globe. Even more, it has been deemed a revolutionary breakthrough in the industry. Why? It not only intensifies the smell of a fragrance but also extends its durability. “This molecule adds vibrancy and depth to almost all types of scents,” says perfumer Kateřina Nováková to the beauty retail specialist site, Notino.
This molecule comes from a component found in jasmine absolute: methyl dihydrojasmonate. Yes, it’s a mouthful, but it’s actually the most intense part of the white flower. It is also known as hedione, which is a bit easier to pronounce. At first, hedione might not revolutionize your scent world. Its fragrance, quite fresh, blends well with floral juices while remaining extremely subtle. The real uniqueness of this molecule lies in its ability to stimulate the pleasure and libido areas of the brain. It’s even whispered that it makes those who wear it more attractive: “It has been shown that hedione binds to the VN1R1 pheromone receptor, located on the human olfactory mucosa, which influences sociosexual behavior, particularly in women,” the professional adds on Notino. However, according to the perfumer, a certain portion of the population cannot, or barely can, perceive hedione.
Nowadays, numerous perfumes include this molecule. For instance, Narcotic Delight by Initio Parfums Privés leverages attraction codes with a trail composed of 50% hedione. Other fragrances featuring it include Petite Chérie by Goutal Paris, L’eau de Rochas Fraîche, Flower By Kenzo, and Hot Couture by Givenchy. Could this be the perfect gift just in time for Valentine’s Day?
