This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
To save money at the supermarket, it’s crucial to recognize some everyday traps. By avoiding this one, you can save up to 70%!
Let’s face it: managing your shopping budget these days is like solving a complex puzzle. With constant price fluctuations, flashy promotions at the end of the aisle luring us in, and bulk packaging that seems to offer incredible savings, it’s hard to dodge all the snares set in supermarket aisles…
We also tend to overlook those ready-to-use products designed to simplify our daily lives by promising a valuable time-saving in the kitchen. We all know the routine of tossing a tray of lasagna into the microwave, or sliding a frozen pizza into the oven on a busy evening. It’s an appealing argument when filling up the shopping cart to face a hectic day. However, unfortunately, saving time doesn’t always equate to saving money…
This is exactly what nutritionist Noémie Combremont criticizes on her YouTube channel Noémie Nutrition with pre-packaged vegetables, already washed and cut. While they save us the pain of a sliced finger on a mandoline (thanks for that), they don’t hesitate to slice into our wallet with a per kilo price significantly higher than their whole counterparts. She points out red cabbage as an example: sold for €7 per kilo when sliced, it drops to €1.99 when bought whole. Opting for fresh vegetables from the stands turns out to be 50 to 70% cheaper, depending on the variety and season.
It’s not just the grocery bill that suffers from choosing pre-prepared veggies. These ready-to-eat veggies also suffer from lower quality. “It’s less tasty, less fresh, and doesn’t last as long,” the nutrition expert emphasizes. In contrast, a whole vegetable stays fresh for several days in the dedicated drawer of the refrigerator.
Not to mention that you can always chop some in advance for the days ahead, as long as you store them in an airtight container. It’s more time-consuming and laborious, sure, but far more cost-effective from every angle!
