It’s a common driving mistake, but those who persist may soon find themselves without a license. This particular French department is taking strict measures…

On the road, anyone can make a mistake. A slight speeding, forgetting to signal, or failing to fully stop at a stop sign. These actions might seem minor, yet they emphasize that traffic laws are not just random restrictions; they primarily exist to ensure safety. Recent road safety statistics strongly illustrate this point: in August 2024, road fatalities in mainland France increased by 18% compared to the same month last year, marking it the deadliest month since 2011. Authorities find these figures alarming.

Out of all the violations recorded each year, there is one that occurs particularly often. It’s penalized with a 135 euro fine and results in a three-point deduction from the driver’s license. This violation falls under the fourth-class misdemeanors, which is considered a moderately severe level in the scale of traffic law sanctions. Law enforcement issues hundreds of fines for this now commonplace behavior daily, to the extent that many drivers seem to underestimate the risks involved.

In the Landes region, authorities have decided to intensify their efforts. The prefect has announced that starting this October, motorists caught in the act will receive a written warning in addition to the usual penalty. This initial step is intended to be educational. However, starting November 1st, if there is no improvement in behavior, the state representative will have the authority to administratively suspend the driver’s license of offenders. Since the beginning of the year, 3,163 drivers have been ticketed for this infraction in the department, indicating that the issue is significant.

For now, this measure will only apply to the Landes region and is considered a trial phase. The main goal is to create a shock effect to address a problem of “mindset,” in the words of the prefect. Operating a 1.5-ton vehicle requires full attention, and any distraction can have serious consequences. It remains to be seen whether this local approach will have a lasting impact on driver behavior.
