Throughout her expansive 149-show Eras Tour, Taylor Swift showcased nearly 100 distinct outfits, each reflecting the themes of her 12 studio albums released over the last 20 years.
While her acclaim as a prolific singer-songwriter endures, fans have been puzzled about how she managed to execute numerous costume changes during each three-hour show.
In recent episodes of her Disney+ documentary, which premiered earlier today, Swift gives viewers a glimpse into the efficient and clever methods she employed backstage to ensure the show proceeded without a hitch.
These revelations include the brief windows of time allocated for each wardrobe switch and the logistics of how these changes were accomplished.
“Each outfit switch takes roughly a minute and fifteen seconds or less,” Jestina O’Dell, one of Swift’s dressers, noted. “Our quickest change happens in just 39 seconds when she’s actually in the room.”
“Watching those quick changes is an extraordinary sight,” remarked Swift’s mother, Andrea. “It’s akin to observing a NASCAR pit stop.”
Swift was offstage for no more than two minutes at any given time.
Joseph Cassell Falconer, Swift’s longtime stylist, explains that the 3-hour performance includes about 20 rapid costume changes. These are facilitated by two dedicated dressers and four strategically placed dressing rooms beneath the stage.
“There’s no room for errors. Everything is meticulously planned out. Every second, every millisecond matters,” O’Dell emphasized.
In a special interview, Fausto Puglisi of Roberto Cavalli, who designed over 20 unique outfits for the Eras Tour, disclosed that numerous aspects were considered for each design.
“There are strict rules, of course; zippers must function a certain way, and we must be meticulous about where crystals are placed. There are many secrets,” he mentioned, praising Swift’s stylist for expertly handling any issues like loose sequins or snags between performances.
“The complexity of our system is incredible. The sheer panic that you might not be ready when the next song begins is what keeps me on schedule,” Swift shared.
Beyond maintaining and tailoring existing costumes, introducing new outfits such as the second black-and-gold “Reputation” catsuit debuted in Miami required a full wardrobe team.
After releasing “The Tortured Poets Department” album in April 2024, Swift introduced a new segment with original music and costumes during her Paris concert in May. This included a white corset gown by Vivienne Westwood adorned with lyrics on the skirt and a metallic two-piece ensemble topped with a formal jacket for her “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” number.
When asked about her favorite costume from the nearly two-year tour?
Swift chose the crystal-encrusted Versace bodysuit. It’s the first costume she dons in the opening “Lover” segment, serving almost like armor that empowered her to excel during even the most demanding performances.
Now that certainly calls for a standing ovation.
