Taylor Swift Ushers in a New Fashion Epoch with Her Latest Album

Taylor Swift’s release of a new album isn’t just a musical milestone but also a shift in fashion trends, heralded by her collaboration with her seasoned stylist Joseph Cassell Falconer. This time, they draw on the sparkling world of a Las Vegas showgirl for Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl,” looking to none other than the showbiz legend.

For the promotional visuals of her upcoming album, Swift is seen adorned in a dazzling costume originally designed by the iconic Bob Mackie for the legendary Las Vegas show “Jubilee!”—a production that graced the stage from 1981 until 2016, becoming the longest-running show in the city’s storied history.

The ensemble Swift wears is lavish, encrusted with rhinestones and complemented by an extravagant feather boa, showcasing the opulence typical of over 1,000 designs Mackie and his co-designer Pete Menefee crafted for the glamorous “Jubilee!” The show itself was a modern nod to the Ziegfeld Follies, a series of elaborate theatrical productions in the early 20th century.

Insider Insights on Mackie’s Timeless Designs

Las Vegas native and stylist Jose Rodrigo, who has intimate experience with Mackie’s stunning creations, worked behind the scenes of “Jubilee!” in the 2010s. He later accessed the show’s costume archives for projects including Dita Von Teese’s Vegas shows and the 2024 movie “The Last Showgirl,” featuring Pamela Anderson.

Rodrigo praises Mackie’s craftsmanship, noting the longevity of his designs: “Even after 40 years, when we revisited these costumes, their vibrancy, design, and structure were intact. They were crafted using only the finest materials,” he shared with Page Six Style.

Mackie, discussing the specifics of Swift’s outfit on Instagram, highlighted that the “Jewel Finale” costume includes intricate French wirework and a blush fabric that creates a daring nude illusion. Rodrigo added, “Each of these costumes bears the names of all the showgirls who have worn them, preserved inside, which adds to their historical significance. However, maintaining and tailoring these costumes while keeping the original elements intact has been a challenge.”

He also noted the logistical challenges of replacing missing original accessories and cleaning elements like rhinestones and chains. Interestingly, Rodrigo mentioned that the initial run of “Jubilee!” led to a global shortage of Swarovski crystals in 1981 due to their extensive use in the costumes.

He credits Dita Von Teese with reviving the showgirl aesthetic, as she was instrumental in bringing attention back to these archived designs after nearly a decade of disuse.

Swift’s Connection to Showgirl Glamour Through Dita Von Teese

It’s speculated that Von Teese played a role in Swift adopting her own “Jubilee!” style for the album, following their collaboration on Swift’s “Bejeweled” music video in 2022. Von Teese revealed, “We really went all out with the wardrobe to ensure it was a family-friendly take on my performances. We even enlisted my costume designer, Catherine D’Lish, for the crystallized looks.”

Von Teese expressed appreciation for Swift’s approach, stating, “Unlike others who might just superficially draw inspiration, Taylor made sure to highlight my contributions, introducing my art to a new generation.”

Executing such elaborate showgirl costumes is physically demanding; according to Rodrigo, these outfits can weigh between 10 to 40 pounds. He describes the dressing process as detailed and sequential, akin to a choreography or recipe, starting from the undergarments to the shimmering outer layers and accessories.

When asked if Swift and her team successfully captured the essence of showgirl glamour for her photo shoot, Rodrigo responded affirmatively. “They couldn’t have done it better,” he said. “The attention to detail and the respect for the original designs were clearly evident in how everything was put together.”
