If your car key battery dies, there’s a handy solution you might not know about…
Modern cars feature automatic unlocking with a battery-operated key fob. This convenience allows the doors to automatically open as you approach the vehicle. No more digging through a purse or bag, especially when your hands are full of groceries or you’re in a rush. An added bonus is that the doors also automatically lock when you walk away and forget to secure them. But what happens if your car key stops working?
While changing the batteries, you might find yourself unable to use your car. If you’re parked far from home and don’t have access to a spare key (or didn’t make a duplicate), there’s a readily available solution that too few people know about. On her TikTok account @iEmna, she posted a video explaining this trick to her followers.
By gently pressing the right button on the key and pulling up on the top at the same time, you can release a manual key that allows you to unlock the driver’s side door. Depending on the vehicle type, the placement of this emergency key can vary, but all recent models include this feature. You simply insert this emergency key into the driver’s door lock to unlock the vehicle. Note that on some models, the lock might be concealed behind a small cover that you’ll need to lift.
But the big question remains: “How do you start the car if the key fob battery is dead?”. No need to worry! Refer to your vehicle’s user manual to find the appropriate procedure. Depending on the model, it might be possible to charge the key by induction either on the central console or near the steering column. By holding the key close to the start button, you should be able to start the engine and be on your way. If it doesn’t work, consider getting a duplicate key to avoid future troubles.
