This icon varies from one vehicle to another, and what many don’t realize is that it provides a crucial clue for refueling efficiently without wasting time.
When you’re behind the wheel, it’s easy to overlook the small details. Sometimes, you might need to consult the car’s owner manual to fully understand the purpose of various indicators and icons displayed on the dashboard. Generally, drivers continue on their way without much thought about these symbols, as long as they grasp the essentials for safe driving. After all, if someone can correctly tell apart the parking lights from the low beams or high beams, and knows how to respond when an indicator starts making noise or flashing, why bother with the more complex details?
However, some of these details are designed to make our lives easier, such as the icon indicating a gas station. Did you know it differs from one car to another? Indeed, it does more than just show how much fuel you have left before you possibly run out! And surprisingly, few people notice this. “For me, the fuel icon just tells me when I need to fill up, I had no idea it had this other feature,” admits Damien, a veteran driver of over twenty years.
If you look closely, you’ll see an arrow next to the gas station icon. This arrow points either to the right or to the left, indicating exactly where the fuel door is located on your car. Depending on the vehicle model, the filler neck might be positioned on either side.
This is incredibly useful information when you’re using someone else’s car, whether it’s your spouse’s, a friend’s, or a family member’s, or when you’re renting a vehicle. It saves you the hassle of guessing or having to drag the fuel hose around the car unnecessarily.
