The age-old debate between dog lovers and cat lovers continues. Those who prefer dogs often cite their loyalty and vivaciousness, while cat enthusiasts tend to appreciate their independence and subtlety. One thing universally acknowledged, however, is that dogs and cats exhibit distinctly different behaviors, especially towards their owners.

In popular belief, there’s a common contrast drawn between a dog’s loyalty and what is often perceived as a cat’s aloofness. “The dog thinks: they feed me, they protect me, they must be gods. The cat thinks: they feed me, they protect me, I must be a god,” as the adage famously attributed to writer Ira Lewis goes. While this might resonate with pet lovers, scientific insights tell a slightly different story. No, cats do not see us as either slaves or as their masters.

To them, there is no hierarchy: we are viewed as their equals, literally. According to three decades of research by British anthrozoologist John Bradshaw, presented in his book Cat Sense, domestic cats regard humans as fellow cats. In their eyes, we are simply larger, hairless cats with peculiar habits. Essentially, we are seen as clumsy, foolishly big felines.

Unlike dogs, which have been bred and thus evolved to recognize humans as leaders or alphas of the pack, cats have retained much of their wild nature and interact with us just as they would with other cats. This explains why they rub against our legs, lick us as if grooming, bring us their prey, or knead with their paws. These social behaviors and protocols are reserved strictly for what they consider members of their group or family. According to John Bradshaw, cats view us as “clumsy big kittens,” or even akin to their own mother.

This might also be why they often ignore commands and seem to snub us: why should they heed an equal? If you thought you had successfully domesticated your cat, think again. Your cat is firmly convinced that it is cohabiting with a family member who needs quite a bit of guidance, given how often they seem to forget what it truly means to be a feline.
