This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Year-round discounted Lidl products mark the supermarket chain’s latest venture into the clearance market. Here’s what shoppers can find at these groundbreaking stores.
Already known as the cheapest supermarket in France, Lidl is now taking its pricing game to new lows. This year, as per UFC-Que Choisir, Lidl has emerged as the leader in the hard discount sector, surpassing competitors like E.Leclerc and Aldi. The German retailer is unbeatable not only in groceries but also in hygiene products, appliances, and DIY tools, making it a popular choice among consumers. And in an exciting development, Lidl has recently decided to launch a new type of store that offers even lower prices.
Deal hunters will be thrilled: at these “outlet” locations, which differ from the usual Lidl stores, the company’s products are available at significantly reduced prices. Offering discounts ranging from 30% to 60% all year round, these clearance supermarkets aim to “give a second life to unsold items” from their regular stores. However, you won’t find any food products here. Let’s look at what is available at the new Lidl Outlet.
Due to health regulations, unsold food items cannot be resold. Instead, shoppers will find five categories of merchandise: fashion and beauty products, home and decor, sports and leisure, tools and garden equipment, and a “seasonal theme.” Dedicated sections will also feature Lidl’s own brands, such as Silvercrest for appliances, Parkside for DIY tools, Crivit for sports equipment, and Lupilu for children’s toys and products. From simple shower gels to air fryers, drills, and toys, a wide array of deals is available. Stock is limited due to the nature of clearance sales, but the selection is updated regularly.
For now, the Lidl Outlet stores are in a trial phase: three have already opened in France. Two launched in June in Île-de-France (one in Saint-Pierre-du-Perray, Essonne, and one in Buchelay, Yvelines), while a third was recently set up in La Ciotat, Bouches-du-Rhône, as of December 11. According to LSA Conso, about ten more stores are expected to open soon, though their locations remain undisclosed.
With this new concept, Lidl is specifically aiming to compete with Action in the low-price market. The Dutch discounter has been the favorite retail chain in France for three years and boasts 800 locations across the country. While Lidl may not match this number, its clearance stores are certainly meeting the growing consumer demand for accessible and regular bargains. The success is evident: nearly 1,000 customers have visited the Île-de-France outlets each day since their opening.
