This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Experts advise against using it in the city. Thankfully, it can be turned off in a flash!
This feature has become second nature for many drivers, as automakers strongly promote its use. However, its adoption comes with a lesser-known downside: over time, it can weaken certain crucial engine components.
Marketed as a technological advancement, this system is now a common feature in most modern vehicles. It is touted for its ability to cut carbon emissions and reduce fuel expenses. However, according to Bumper, a company specializing in automotive repair financing, the situation is more complex. “While these systems are designed to enhance energy efficiency and cut emissions, they can be harsh on vital engine components,” a company spokesperson emphasized. Indeed, frequent use leads to premature wear of these essential parts, eventually leading to expensive repairs.
The warning gained traction after a viral video by Scotty Kilmer, an American mechanic with millions of followers. He claims that “up to 97% of engine wear occurs during ignition.” Essentially, the most significant damage happens at the very moment the engine starts using the “Start and Stop” feature. Thus, repeatedly initiating this feature multiple times a day, especially during city drives with frequent stops, significantly heightens the risk.
Practically speaking, this technology can be deactivated by simply pressing a button on the dashboard, marked with an “A” surrounded by an arrow. Experts do not necessarily recommend completely abandoning it but suggest adjusting its use according to driving conditions. On long, smooth journeys, its impact is negligible. However, in daily traffic jams or frequent stops in urban settings, its effect becomes far more problematic. While modern engines are built to endure these repeated ignition cycles, no machinery lasts forever. Considering the rising costs of repairs, it is better to be proactive.
