An American dietitian suggests that this seemingly healthy food could be the reason your face looks swollen when you wake up. If you’ve ever noticed puffiness in your face in the morning, it’s time to uncover the culprit.

Have you ever woken up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that your face seems unusually puffy? Your eyelids might feel heavy, you might see bags under your eyes, your cheeks appear fuller, and your facial features look less defined. This condition, known as facial water retention, is more common than you might think. While insufficient sleep, alcohol consumption, or allergies can contribute to this, there’s also a popular food that might be to blame.

The feeling of puffiness in the morning is actually a sign that your body is retaining too much fluid. This water retention is especially noticeable in the face because the skin there is thin and sensitive to water fluctuations. But what causes this sudden buildup? Often, the answer lies in what you ate the night before. Certain foods, due to their high salt and additive content, can promote this retention. Surprisingly, one of the trendiest dishes right now is particularly deceptive: it appears light, fresh, and healthy, but it actually contains more sodium than many processed foods. This dish, popular for its variety and sociability, consists of vinegared rice, raw fish, and is almost always served with a generous helping of soy sauce. The latter is one of the main culprits: its high salt content alone can disrupt your body’s water balance in just one evening. As California-based registered dietitian Caitlin Beale explains to RealSimple, “While anyone might experience facial swelling after consuming high-sodium foods, certain individuals are more at risk.” For instance, “you might be more prone to feeling bloated during premenstrual syndrome or perimenopause/menopause.”

Despite its healthy image, sushi harbors an excess of sodium, which explains why your face might look swollen the next day. Of course, there’s no need to completely eliminate this Japanese dish from your diet. However, to avoid this issue, it’s wise to limit your intake of soy sauce, stay well-hydrated, and consider opting for low-sodium alternatives.
