What started as a serene fishing trip on Grenada Lake, Mississippi, quickly turned into an extraordinary rescue mission for Bob Gist and his friend, Brad Carlisle. The two men, joined by their guide, Jordan Chrestman, were hoping for a day filled with peace and prized catches. But instead of reeling in fish, they found themselves saving 38 stranded hunting dogs struggling in the water.

Grenada Lake, known for its thriving population of black crappie, draws countless fishing enthusiasts each year. On this particular day, Bob, hailing from Arkansas, and Brad, from Tennessee, never anticipated that their fishing rods would take a back seat to an unforgettable act of heroism.
An Unbelievable Scene in the Middle of the Lake
Not long after they set out on the water, the group spotted something unusual about two kilometers from the shore. To their astonishment, dozens of dogs were paddling aimlessly, visibly disoriented and unable to find their way back to dry land. Many of the animals were wearing radio collars and bore bright markings on their fur, indicating they were hunting dogs.
Realizing the dire situation, Bob, Brad, and Jordan quickly sprang into action. “They were lost,” Bob recounted. “The way their heads were bobbing in the water, there was no way they could see the shore.”
A Rescue Effort Like No Other
The fishermen steered their boat toward the distressed animals and began pulling them aboard one by one. The dogs, clearly exhausted and frightened, swam in all directions, making the task even more challenging. Despite this, the trio managed to load 27 dogs onto their boat and transport them safely to the shore.
After ensuring the first group was out of harm’s way, they returned to the lake for the remaining 11 dogs, completing their rescue mission. The entire ordeal took nearly an hour, during which time the dogs had been stranded, unable to navigate back to land.
The Unexpected Reason Behind the Ordeal
The dogs were part of a “Fox Run”, a traditional hunting activity in which trained dogs track foxes. But on this occasion, the hounds had been distracted by a deer that dashed into the lake. Driven by instinct, they followed the deer into the open water, losing sight of the shore in the process. Their owners, lacking boats, were powerless to retrieve them and deeply grateful when they learned of the rescue.
“We saved every dog we saw,” Bob humbly remarked. For him, it was a fishing trip he would never forget—a day not defined by fish but by bravery and compassion.
A Lifesaving Effort That Won Hearts
Thanks to the quick thinking and selflessness of these three fishermen, all 38 dogs survived the ordeal. Their heroic actions have since become a heartwarming reminder of the power of human kindness.
