What began as a tranquil fishing outing on Grenada Lake, Mississippi, soon turned into an extraordinary rescue mission for two men, Bob Gist and Brad Carlisle. Joined by their guide, Jordan Chrestman, they had set out for a peaceful day of fishing, but what they encountered in the water would lead them to take action that would save dozens of lives.

An Unbelievable Scene in the Middle of the Lake
Grenada Lake is well-known for its black crappie population, attracting avid anglers from all over the country. Bob, visiting from Arkansas, and Brad, a Tennessee resident, never expected their rods would be put aside in favor of a rescue mission. But that’s exactly what happened.
Just a couple of kilometers from shore, they noticed something strange on the water. At first, it looked like small debris, but as they got closer, they realized it was something much more alarming—dozens of hunting dogs paddling aimlessly, visibly struggling in the water. Some wore radio collars and had distinctive markings on their fur, a sign they were trained for hunting.
“It was heartbreaking,” Bob recalled. “They were completely lost. The way their heads were bobbing in the water, they had no way of seeing the shore.”

A Rescue Effort Like No Other
Without hesitation, the trio quickly got their boat closer to the distressed dogs. The animals, exhausted and frightened, swam in all directions, making it difficult to pull them aboard. But Bob, Brad, and Jordan worked tirelessly, hauling 27 dogs onto their boat and safely transporting them to the shore.
After ensuring the first group was safe, they returned to the lake to rescue the remaining 11 dogs. The entire operation took nearly an hour, and during that time, the dogs had been struggling in the water, unable to make it back to land on their own.
“The whole thing felt surreal,” Brad said. “We didn’t know what was going to happen, but we just knew we had to get them out of there.”
The Unexpected Reason Behind the Ordeal
It wasn’t until later that the group learned the cause of the dogs’ distress. They were part of a Fox Run, a traditional hunting activity where trained dogs track foxes. But this time, something had gone wrong. A deer had bolted into the lake, and the dogs, following their instincts, chased after it into the water. In the process, they became disoriented, losing sight of the shore and their owners.
With no boats at their disposal, the hunters were unable to retrieve their dogs and were deeply grateful when they learned of the rescue.
“We saved every dog we could,” Bob humbly remarked. For him, the day wasn’t about fishing but about something far more important—helping those in need.
A Lifesaving Effort That Won Hearts
Thanks to the quick thinking and selflessness of Bob, Brad, and Jordan, all 38 dogs were safely rescued. Their actions have since been celebrated as a touching reminder of human compassion. While Grenada Lake is famous for its fishing, on this particular day, it was the site of a remarkable display of humanity, where the lives of animals and people intersected in the most unexpected way.
The rescue mission has since become an inspiration, showing that even in the most surprising situations, acts of kindness can make all the difference.
