Mark Zuckerberg is best known for running Meta and shaping the future of virtual reality, but in his downtime, he’s busy conquering another world—Civilization VI. The Facebook founder recently revealed he has poured more than 1,000 hours into the strategy game, and he’s convinced few players on Earth could touch his level.

“I want to be the best in the world,” he told gaming outlet Dexerto. “I think I should stream on Twitch and challenge someone. I’d be surprised if anyone could actually beat me.”
For those unfamiliar, Civilization is a famously complex franchise where players guide a civilisation from ancient times to the space age, balancing diplomacy, war, culture, and economics. In other words, not so different from managing a tech empire—except with more catapults.
Confidence or overconfidence?
Zuckerberg’s boast may sound impressive, but competitive gamers will note that 1,000 hours—while substantial—doesn’t guarantee mastery. Many elite players log far more time, refining every detail of their strategy.
And then there’s the question of opponents. Most of Zuckerberg’s experience comes from battling the game’s artificial intelligence, which may stump beginners but quickly becomes predictable to veterans. Going head-to-head against seasoned human players could be a different story entirely. His claim of near-invincibility might not survive a proper test in the online arena.
Musk takes the opposite route
If Zuckerberg is the self-proclaimed “tryhard” gamer, Elon Musk is his chaotic counterpart. The Tesla and SpaceX boss recently admitted to cheating in the role-playing game Path of Exile 2. During a livestream, Musk showed off a high-level character, but sharp-eyed fans noticed something didn’t add up. Pressed by the community, he confessed to “boosting”—sharing his account so others could level it up for him.
It’s a classic shortcut that hardcore gamers despise, and while the developers haven’t announced a punishment, the incident didn’t exactly polish Musk’s gamer credentials.
Gaming as a mirror of personality
The contrast between the two tech titans is striking. Zuckerberg grinds out endless hours in pursuit of perfect strategy, convinced he’s approaching “grandmaster” status. Musk, on the other hand, skips the grind altogether, preferring spectacle—even if it means breaking the rules.

Whether or not Zuckerberg really is unstoppable in Civilization VI, his devotion reveals something about how he approaches challenges: methodical, relentless, and quietly competitive. Musk, by contrast, embodies disruption—rule-bending, impatient, and always ready to stir drama.
In the end, maybe their gaming habits are less about winning or losing and more about reflecting how they run their real-world empires.
