Designed to make cultural access easier for youth, the Culture Pass provides a specific amount of money based on age and school grade, starting from the 6th grade.
The Culture Pass was developed by the government to engage all young people and students under 18 in culture and the arts. This financial support primarily funds certain cultural outings or purchases, but it has recently sparked controversy: Culture Minister Rachida Dati has called for a review of the program. Particularly, she criticized that while many youths use the Culture Pass for escape rooms, it doesn’t cover the Puy du Fou park, known for its historical performances. So, what exactly can you buy with this pass, and who is eligible? Here’s everything you need to know about this youth initiative.
Who is Eligible for the Culture Pass, and at What Age?
The Culture Pass is aimed at young people under 18, whether they are in school or not, living in mainland France or overseas territories. Specifically, those who can benefit are:
- Students in 6th and 7th grades
- Youth aged 15 to 17
- 18-year-olds.
- Non-French nationals who are 18 and live in mainland France and overseas territories are also eligible.
How Much Money Does the Culture Pass Provide Based on Age?
The amount provided by the Culture Pass varies based on the age of the youth.
- 15-year-olds receive a Culture Pass worth 20 euros.
- 16 and 17-year-olds receive a Culture Pass worth 30 euros.
Additionally, a group offer managed by teachers on a dedicated platform allows for an annual benefit of 25 euros for middle school students, 30 euros for 10th graders and vocational students, and 20 euros for 11th and 12th graders.
What Can You Buy with the Culture Pass?
Introduced in 2021, the Culture Pass is a financial aid given to each young person to engage in artistic activities, enjoy outings to cultural venues (cinemas, theaters, concert halls, museums, etc.), and/or invite friends to share a cultural experience (duo offers). The Culture Pass also funds cultural purchases, including:
- Booking cinema or show tickets
- Purchasing books, drawing supplies, or musical instruments
- Subscribing to online music or video platforms
- Visiting museums
- Attending workshops, artistic and cultural practice activities, lectures…
- Taking dance, singing, or drama classes
How to Use the Culture Pass?
To use the Culture Pass, everything is done online via a free app. Download the Culture Pass app on a computer or a smartphone via Google Play or the App Store. Simply register, and then you can reserve activities or cultural products directly through the app. It’s user-friendly and offers several features like the duo offer, which allows inviting friends, or geolocation to discover nearby offers.
What is the Time Limit for Using the Culture Pass?
18-year-olds must use the Culture Pass within 24 months. After this period, they can still keep the pass to browse the catalog of free offers available.
For middle and high school students, credits are awarded annually. They can be used up until the student’s 18th birthday, with no possibility of extension beyond this date.
