Zuckerberg says smartphones are done — and Samsung is already working on what’s next

Mark Zuckerberg has been saying for years that the smartphone era is fading. Now, even Samsung—the company that built its empire on phones—appears to be preparing for life after the device that defined the 21st century.

Meta’s Bet on Glasses Pays Off

Unlike Apple or Samsung, Meta never made smartphones, which made it easier for Zuckerberg to argue that the future isn’t on a phone screen. Instead, he put his chips on smart glasses. After an awkward detour with the metaverse, his partnership with Ray-Ban has delivered real traction, selling in the millions and carving out a new category in wearable tech.

For Meta, it’s proof that the next platform for computing could be something worn on your face—not carried in your pocket.

Samsung Eyes the Same Horizon

But what about Samsung, the global smartphone giant? According to reports from South Korea’s SEDaily, the company is seriously developing its own pair of smart glasses, with a possible launch window as soon as late 2026.

The device would follow the release of Samsung’s first mixed-reality headset, expected later this year. Early leaks suggest the glasses will look more like Meta’s Ray-Ban AI models than Apple’s Vision Pro: equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers, but without an augmented reality display. Instead, they would be tightly integrated with Galaxy smartphones, functioning as a natural extension of Samsung’s ecosystem.

Not the Same as Its Google Deal

This project is separate from Samsung’s partnership with Google on Android XR, the operating system tailored for mixed-reality headsets and AR glasses. The rumored product would be a standalone Samsung project, signaling that the company doesn’t want to wait for others to dictate its future in wearables.

According to SEDaily, Samsung’s decision is based on a belief that glasses could succeed the smartphone itself. “These devices allow users to share in real time what they see, freeing them from the limits of a handheld phone,” the outlet reported.

The Numbers Are Hard to Ignore

Market forecasts back up the hype. Fortune Business Insights estimates that the connected glasses sector will hit $253.5 billion in 2025, with explosive growth to more than $1.6 trillion by 2032. With numbers like these, it’s no wonder the world’s biggest tech firms are racing to stake their claim.

The Big Question: Will People Wear Them?

For now, the real challenge isn’t building the glasses—it’s convincing people to wear them daily. Phones are already glued to our hands; glasses, for many, are optional. But if companies can make them stylish, affordable, and genuinely useful, scrolling through TikTok or checking messages without ever touching a phone might soon feel normal.

Zuckerberg thinks smartphones are yesterday’s news. If Samsung agrees—and its track record in mobile is anything to go by—the end of the smartphone era may arrive sooner than we expect.
