Mark Zuckerberg has a warning for anyone still clinging to their smartphone: without smart glasses, you may soon be left behind. For Meta, AI-powered eyewear isn’t just a gadget—it’s the next step in how humans will connect with technology.

Why Meta Is Betting on Glasses
Artificial intelligence is quickly weaving itself into daily life, from voice assistants to personalized recommendations to the smart features in our phones. But Zuckerberg insists that the real breakthrough will come from smart glasses.
On a recent investor call, he argued that people who don’t wear them will eventually be at a disadvantage. The glasses, he says, will let AI “see what you see, hear what you hear, and assist you at all times.”
Meta already sells connected eyewear through Ray-Ban and Oakley, with features like hands-free photos, music playback, and integration with Meta AI. The next generation, equipped with built-in displays, could make the line between the physical and digital worlds practically invisible.
Billions Lost, but Zuckerberg Won’t Back Down
Meta’s Reality Labs division has poured staggering sums into this vision—more than $70 billion since 2020, including over $4.5 billion in losses just last quarter. Despite skepticism and the flop of his much-hyped metaverse, Zuckerberg is doubling down, convinced that AI will redefine every corner of the tech industry.
He has even predicted that Meta’s AI will soon generate most of the code powering its services, cutting the need for traditional developers. In his view, smart glasses will be the natural interface for this AI-driven future.
The Competition Is Watching
Meta isn’t alone in experimenting. Startups and rivals are tinkering with AI wearables of all shapes and sizes: smart pendants, brooches, even clip-on devices. Yet among these, glasses remain the most credible candidate to replace or at least rival the smartphone.
Analysts say the challenge is less about technology than about consumer adoption. Will people actually wear glasses all day, every day? And will they be affordable enough to reach beyond early adopters?
A Future Still in the Balance
For Zuckerberg, there’s no doubt: smart glasses are the future, and those who resist will miss out on the advantages of constant AI assistance. Whether the world agrees—or whether some other wearable form factor wins out—remains uncertain.
But one thing is clear: the race to find the next big personal device is on, and Meta is betting that the answer will sit not in your pocket, but on your face.
