A Surprisingly Troubling Reason

Yet, some seniors may find themselves without their retirement pensions for months on end, despite having paid into the system their entire careers. This is precisely the situation for a 92-year-old woman in Normandy, who hasn’t received any pension payments for months despite her lifelong contributions. She is now left without any income, an exceptional circumstance that severely impacts her daily life.

Making matters worse, she is also ineligible for her late husband’s survivor benefits. Typically, in France, a surviving spouse’s income is supplemented by the survivor benefits according to specific social security rules, but in her case, these rights are inexplicably frozen. Despite her numerous attempts to address this issue, without any income, her situation has become unbearable. The retired senior cannot fathom why her rightfully earned benefits, after a lifetime of work, are beyond reach.

The administrative error behind this predicament is baffling: this retiree, residing in a small town in Orne, was mistakenly marked as deceased in the records, an incorrect status that immediately ceased all her entitlements. “It was only after several calls that they finally (!) told me that mom was deceased!” her daughter Brigitte explained to Ouest-France, who has been navigating these procedures on her mother’s behalf. This incorrect information was enough to automatically stop the disbursement of her retirement pension as well as her husband’s survivor benefits. What followed was an exhausting battle to prove that her mother is indeed alive. Although she eventually managed to get her retirement pension reinstated, the survivor benefits she was supposed to receive have yet to be paid.

So what should one do in the event of an administrative error? It is crucial to check one’s records with the retirement fund and social agencies, request official individual status certificates, and if necessary, seek help from a mediator or legal advisor to challenge the decisions and secure a correction. While this type of issue is rare, it can happen to anyone due to a failure to update records or a data entry error.

The case of this nonagenarian from Normandy highlights how a simple administrative mistake can have profound consequences on an elderly person’s life, even when they have fulfilled all their contribution obligations. It also underscores the importance of having a good support network, regularly monitoring social rights, and persistently contacting relevant agencies at the first sign of an unexplained cessation of benefits.
