Ariana Grande has resurrected a piece of classic film attire for her most recent style reveal, donning a unique 1940s dress designed by Gilbert Adrian, the famed MGM costume designer renowned for his work on 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz.”
The pop icon’s stylist, Law Roach, showcased the monochrome images on Instagram on Sunday, exclaiming, “And then THIS happened… Ari wearing Adrian! Just a little piece of HOLLYWOOD history.”
Known in the credits as “Gowns by Adrian,” Adrian was the principal costume designer at MGM from 1928 to 1941. His most memorable work, however, was for “The Wizard of Oz,” which solidified his status as a legendary figure in the realm of costume design.
“From Dorothy’s checkered dress and ruby slippers to Glinda’s opulent pink gown and the Wicked Witch of the West’s lengthy black cape, all of these were Adrian originals that forever transformed both cinema and fashion,” Roach noted in his post.
Upon departing MGM in 1941, Adrian opened his own boutique, Gowns by Adrian. “He maintained elements from his iconic MGM designs, including pronounced shoulders, dramatic silhouettes, and impeccable tailoring,” the stylist added.
The dress worn by Grande, which one similar version previously sold for $15,000 on the upscale vintage platform 1stDibs, features a striking “winged” capelet back and is delicately embellished with small rhinestones that produce a gentle twinkling effect.
Today, many of Adrian’s creations are exhibited in museums around the globe, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
The singer’s mother, Joan Grande, reacted to the fashion statement on Roach’s Instagram post: “Breathtaking in every way!! The magnificent person wearing it, the meaning behind the dress, the magnificent stylist who is beyond thoughtful and precise and respectful of what each moment means… and the magnificence of the dress and designer.”
One fan commented, “She’s pure magic, Ariana the woman you are, seeing you in this dress, just wow.”
Another expressed, “So iconic! Thank you for giving us the Gilbert Adrian moment we needed.”
Yet another fan anticipated, “oh this press tour is about to have me on the floor.”
Roach, who famously “retired” from styling in March 2023 only to shift to select projects, had worked with Grande from 2015 until 2020, after which the singer teamed up with celebrity stylist Mimi Cuttrell. However, Roach has recently returned to style Grande in archival Elie Saab for the launch of the “Wicked: For Good” press tour and a custom polka dot Fendi for the VMAs red carpet.
The initial part of the two-segment “Wicked” movie debuted in theaters on Nov. 22, 2024, amassing over $756 million globally and securing Grande’s first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Now, with the release of “Wicked: For Good” set for Nov. 21, Grande and Roach are set to dazzle once again with what’s expected to be another spellbinding showcase of fashion.
