Known for its tender meat and hefty cuts, this poultry can really stretch your end-of-year budget. Except at this store, where it’s sold for half the price found elsewhere…

During the holiday season, the cost of shopping at supermarkets and specialty stores can be steep. Appetizers, main courses, desserts (not to mention gifts)… everything seems designed to drain your wallet. Smoked salmon, foie gras, cheeses, and traditional Yule logs: these festive foods take a heavy toll on your finances. At your local butcher’s, it’s a disaster: the price of free-range capon has risen again. It’s now over $20 per kilo. Quickly, you do the math in your head. That plump, free-range capon in the display, weighing 3.5 kilos, would therefore cost… $70? Even though you reassure yourself that it will feed all your guests without issue, the price is hard to swallow. This year, you decide to skip it. A nice guinea fowl will suffice!

But oh, how you love that poultry… Its meat is incredibly tender, melting right in your mouth. Last year, you served it with roasted garlic and herb potatoes, a stir-fry of chanterelles and chestnuts, and a rich poultry gravy. Just thinking about it makes your mouth water… Don’t worry, your dreams aren’t going up in smoke. At one particular retailer, the free-range capon is selling for $9.99 per kilo, which is half the price of many other places, without any compromise on quality.

Offered by Lidl, the Deluxe free-range capon caught our eye. This French poultry, raised outdoors, has earned the Red Label certification. This certification, awarded by the Certipaq agency, ensures adherence to a stringent set of standards, approved by ministerial decree. The key criteria? The capons must be raised outdoors for at least 150 days and fed mostly cereals, supplemented with dairy products. The result? Their meat is of superior quality compared to others. As noted on its packaging, the Deluxe capon is indeed fed 75% cereals and 5% dairy products. Besides being affordable, this white-labeled capon promises deliciously tender and flavorful meat.

Available in Lidl supermarkets starting December 11, 2025, a bird weighing about 3 kilos will cost around thirty dollars. This allows you to kick off the holiday festivities without emptying your wallet too much!
