During the promotional tour for the 2023 film “Barbie,” the celebrated Australian actress fully committed to her role, inspiring a coffee table book with her doll-like fashion choices on the red carpet. Continuing her dramatic flair, she dazzled audiences earlier this year with her “Wuthering Heights” appearances, adorning herself in faux hair and hundreds of carats of diamonds.
Zendaya has also been captivating global audiences at premieres, collaborating with stylist Law Roach to deliver spectacular, thematic ensembles for “Dune,” “Challengers,” and her latest project, “The Drama.”
Yet, the stars of the “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” are embracing a distinctly different approach to thematic dressing.
At a recent photocall in Tokyo, the cast celebrated the animated film in an eclectic mix of vibrant outfits. Jack Black fully embraced his role by showing up in a Bowser costume from Spirit Halloween, while Keegan-Michael Key sported a suit emblazoned with “Super Mario Bros.” imagery and topped off with a polka-dot hat, hinting at the Mushroom Kingdom.
Other cast members like Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Charlie Day (Luigi), and Donald Glover (Yoshi) opted for more subtle attire. Chris Pratt, voicing the lead character, paired a classic gray suit with striking red sneakers reminiscent of Mario’s footwear. Anya Taylor-Joy, embodying Princess Peach, opted for high fashion with a custom Jacquemus ensemble featuring a bandeau top, a long pencil skirt, and a large hat, all in a peach hue.
A fashion favorite, Taylor-Joy is familiar with method dressing herself. For the “Mad Max” prequel promotions, she wore futuristic outfits characterized by frayed designs and intricate lace-up details.
She even donned a metallic minidress and, for the film’s premiere in May 2024, appeared in a dystopian-style couture gown with a spear-covered headpiece to match.
At a special showing of the original “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Taylor-Joy turned heads in a custom pink leather jumpsuit complete with matching thigh-high boots and gloves from Dior.
At the same 2023 gathering, Jack Black’s homage to Bowser was a tad less conspicuous yet still bold, featuring a flame-decorated suit and a spiky shell attached to the back, celebrating the infamous Koopa king.
With the press tour for the video game adaptation already creating buzz, particularly after Taylor-Joy’s unexpected comparison of Princess Peach to Joni Mitchell, the fashion spectacle surrounding the movie is set to escalate even further.
