All you need are a few small tools you probably already have in your drawers. So grab your foundation.
After the age of 40, applying foundation becomes a balancing act. A heavy foundation accentuates wrinkles, while a too-light one fails to cover redness and shadowy areas. However, a professional makeup artist has reignited the conversation with a simple trick that’s being hailed as a game-changer for those seeking a clean, radiant finish without heaviness or a caked-on look.
As we age, our skin loses flexibility, hydration, and evenness, dramatically altering how makeup textures settle on it. Many find that the foundations and concealers they used to rely on now highlight fine lines instead of smoothing them over. This observation led one makeup professional to rethink how cosmetic products should be applied.
At the forefront of this method, Katie Jane Hughes has gained recognition for her pragmatic approach to makeup, avoiding the heavy-handed techniques often showcased online. In a TikTok video, she shared what she describes as “the best advice I can give you” for applying concealer. She immediately specifies that “this tip applies to both concealer and foundation”, and emphasizes one crucial element: “The secret? The brush.” She explains how to achieve a beautiful complexion without makeup settling into creases.
The technique involves using a minimal amount of a full-coverage concealer placed on the back of the hand, then lightly tapping it with an eyeshadow brush. This lightly loaded brush is then delicately swept over areas needing coverage, allowing for a very thin, even layer of makeup without visible buildup or settling into wrinkles. For optimal results, Katie Jane Hughes advises starting with well-maintained skin, including gentle exfoliation the day before.
The expert also points out that if a thick foundation is applied around the nose, it will crease more quickly. This warning applies to all the mobile areas of the face such as the forehead and around the mouth, where makeup tends to shift. She asserts: “Once you try this method, you won’t want to go back.”
