Pro Makeup Artist Reveals: This Common Powder Mistake is Aging You!

"Ca marque les rides et les ridules" : cette erreur que l'on fait toutes en appliquant notre poudre selon un maquilleur pro

Applying mattifying powder is a daily routine for many of us. However, there’s a right and a wrong way to do it, as explained by this professional makeup artist.

Finishing your makeup routine with some powder is an essential step for many. Despite the growing trend of dewy skin, several people (including the author of this article) still prefer a matte finish, especially for the complexion. Perhaps it’s a holdover from teenage years spent battling oily skin—and you’d be correct in thinking so! Yet, according to professional makeup artist Charly Salvator, all those years of practice might not have perfected your powder application technique. If you’re used to dunking a large brush into the powder and sweeping it across your entire face, you’re actually making a significant makeup mistake. “By setting your foundation this way, even with oily skin, you’ll achieve the opposite of what you want. It will accentuate lines, wrinkles, fine lines, and dryness,” he explains in a video posted on TikTok. More so, according to the makeup artist, this method can create a textured effect on the skin, dull the complexion, and strip away the face’s natural glow.

For a beautiful, bright result with a long-lasting matte effect, Charly Salvator suggests using a powder puff or a fine brush, such as one used for blush. Pour a small amount of powder into the lid of your container and crush it with the applicator. Then, apply the powder only to the T-zone—that is, the forehead, nose, and chin (if needed), as well as where you have applied concealer, to ensure it holds throughout the day.

If you’re eager to try this tip but unsure which product to choose, don’t worry: the professional makeup artist recommends several powders in his video. Among his favorites are the Translucid Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier, the Translucid Loose Setting Powder Ultra Blur from the same brand, and the Light Reflecting Setting Powder by Nars. Now, you’re all set to make your selection!
