If you got your driver’s license over 10 years ago, you missed out on the three dreaded questions asked of new drivers today. Could you answer them flawlessly?
In the past, the practical driving test primarily focused on vehicle control and the candidate’s ability to handle traffic situations. However, in recent years, the test has evolved to more accurately reflect the real-world scenarios that drivers face daily. It’s no longer just about ensuring that one can turn, brake, or merge correctly, but also about making sure the future driver knows how to react appropriately to breakdowns, hazards, or accidents.
Since January 1, 2018, out of 100 questions, three are asked on the day of the practical exam for a Class B license. These questions cover vehicle checks, road safety, and first aid. Specifically, the examiner might ask the candidate to identify a specific part of the car (such as the light controls, the location of the coolant, or how to check certain indicators) followed by a question related to safe driving and another on emergency response actions. Each correct answer scores a point, which can be crucial for the final result.
The importance of these questions is substantial. The goal is not to turn candidates into mechanics, but to ensure they can independently handle common situations. Knowing where the fog lights are, recognizing a brake warning light, or explaining how to secure an accident scene might seem basic, but many experienced drivers today would fail to correctly answer all such queries. Moreover, do you think you would pass the driving test if you had to take it today? To find out, here’s a quiz featuring some of the questions asked during the exam:
Among the 100 possible questions, examples include checking the tires, using hazard lights, the presence of a high-visibility vest, or what to do if you encounter an unconscious victim. Other questions focus on simple but practical actions, like opening the hood, locating the windshield washer fluid reservoir, checking a light’s function, or knowing when to call emergency services and what information to provide them. These are practical skills that many learn during their driving test, which they are grateful to have on a rainy night, at a highway rest area, or by the side of a country road.
This also serves as a valuable reminder for more seasoned drivers. Having had a license for ten, fifteen, or twenty years doesn’t mean one still possesses all the right reflexes, nor does it imply familiarity with the current examination standards and expectations. Rules change, as do vehicle features, and some safety and first aid concepts deserve regular review. In driving, experience is valuable, of course, but it should never replace ongoing learning and refreshment of skills.
