The Post-Beach Ritual That’s Harming Your Skin
After a day at the beach, most of us have a typical routine: a cool shower to wash off the salt and then some moisturizing. However, a very common habit within this routine may actually be undermining all your efforts. While you might think you’re cleansing your skin or enhancing your tan, you’re actually making a significant mistake.

Returning from the sea, your skin has endured the harsh elements: wind, sea salt, pool chlorine, and of course, sunlight. Even if you’ve diligently applied sunscreen, your skin’s barrier is temporarily weakened, dried out, and undergoing a regeneration process. Who hasn’t felt that rough texture on their skin after a day filled with sea air? With your skin coated in a mix of sand and sunscreen, it’s tempting to want a deep clean to restore smooth skin and a radiant tan. But beware, the backlash is real! Post-beach exfoliation is the worst way to treat your skin at this time.
Whether it’s a mechanical scrub, a loofah, or even a mild chemical peel, following up a beach day with exfoliation is the ultimate bad idea of the summer. Why? Because your skin has just spent hours fighting off external aggressions. The sun causes a micro-inflammation of the epidermis (even without visible sunburn). By scrubbing your skin with abrasive products at this moment, you’re doubling the aggression. First, you destroy the hydrolipidic film, already weakened by salt and UV rays, which is literally stripped away by the scrub. This leads to severe dehydration and skin that peels much faster. Furthermore, you risk a rebound effect. In response to this mechanical aggression, your skin may produce more sebum (hello post-vacation breakouts) or thicken, which dulls your complexion. Finally, contrary to the popular belief that scrubs “brighten” your tan, doing so on heated skin will speed up peeling and cause your tan to flake off in patches.
How to Maintain a Golden Glow and Healthy Skin
To display a golden complexion and healthy skin, you need to reverse the usual post-beach tactics. After the beach, skip the harsh scrubbing and switch to absolute repair mode. Opt for a soap-free shower gel or a shower oil, and apply an after-sun lotion rich in aloe vera or calendula.
If you feel a strong need to exfoliate to maintain your tan, wait at least 48 hours after your last sun exposure and choose an ultra-gentle or enzyme-based, grain-free formula, preferably in the evening. Your skin will thank you!
