Beware of this everyday item. A dermatologist explains why it’s best to ditch it.
Looks can be deceiving… This saying applies to hygiene products as well. One such item might currently be in your shower. Be warned: after reading this article, you’ll likely throw it straight into the trash.
“Here’s something you’ll never find in my house as a dermatologist”, writes health professional Leena Ramani (known as @leenaderm on Instagram) in a video post. Before revealing what it is, it’s crucial to understand why you should consider parting with it. First, according to the dermatologist, it is a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Why? Because these items remain in a moist and warm environment. Additionally, they can be very harsh on your skin, potentially worsening conditions like eczema, acne, or rosacea if you are prone to them. Lastly, they do not clean the body effectively. Yes, we’re talking about loofahs. They are seldom washed or replaced, which can lead to poor hygiene—a real pity after a nice shower or bath.
“What can we use instead?”, someone asked in the comments. This information surprises many people. Leena Ramani didn’t hold back: she lists all possible alternatives to loofahs. For instance, you can use a soft, freshly laundered washcloth (without scrubbing too hard). A silicone brush is another option, as it dries quickly and is less abrasive on the skin. A cleansing product containing chemical exfoliants can also remove dead skin cells without the need for scrubbing, as a loofah would. Lastly, a simple and inexpensive technique involves just your hand and a gentle cleanser.
We understand if this is disappointing. Loofahs are not only practical but also pretty! However, as often said, hygiene comes first. So, do we keep or toss them?
