He thought he was rescuing a sheep—but it turned out to be something else
This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
An avocado that’s turned brown even after just being cut? Forget the lemon, this method keeps it fresh for much longer…
Guilty. That’s the verdict you find yourself giving when you see the sorry state of your half avocado after a night in the fridge. By saving the other half for later, you’ve unwittingly sentenced its vibrant green flesh to an eternity of darkness. No use trying to snap a picture of your avocado toast for Instagram, the foodie jury won’t grant you any leniency…
However, you do have a few arguments to support your case. You’ve taken countless steps to pamper your avocado. To slow down its oxidation, you drenched the cut surface in lemon juice. You even flipped it over on a plate (placing the flesh against the bottom) to minimize its exposure to air. Some say with this method, an opened avocado “will easily last two to three days in the fridge.” Meanwhile, you end up in the hot seat. Not them.
At the same time, how can you be blamed? The advice you received was confusing. Between the citrus, oil, and salt, how were you supposed to know what would actually work? Or if any method would work at all? A rumor has it that the best technique is something entirely different… “I’ve discovered THE ultimate method to keep a half avocado from turning brown,” claims Agathe, aka @byagathe_foodie on Instagram. “And it’s much more effective than lemon,” she insists. So, what is this magical “trick”? For once, it doesn’t involve any special ingredients. It’s more about following a three-step protocol.
Firstly, keep the pit in the avocado half you want to preserve. Secondly, place your half-fruit in a Tupperware container with just a bit of water at the bottom: make sure the cut side is facing down so that the flesh contacts the water, but there’s no need to submerge it completely! Thirdly, seal your container tightly and store it in the refrigerator. By doing this, your avocado should still be “perfect” 48 to 72 hours later. Isn’t it worth a reprieve just to try out this tip?
So, are you ready to appeal and save your avocado from an untimely end? With this storage trick, you no longer need to juggle lemon juice, oil, or salt with no assurance of success. Verdict: try it, and you’ll love it. And who knows, maybe your avocado toast two days later will finally have its moment of glory on Instagram… Case closed!
