This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Are your lemons going bad too quickly in the fridge? Stop storing them in the vegetable drawer: with this method, you can keep them fresh up to three times longer!
A squeeze of lemon juice is always welcome. However, buying lemons in bulk just because they’re cheaper? No more! Unfortunately, you can’t seem to use them up in time. Except in the summer when you’re all about lemonade, you barely use them. Occasionally, you might squeeze some over fish, use them in a chicken marinade, or to dress a tabbouleh salad… and that’s about it. Sure, once a year during the holidays, you might spritz some on oysters. For a while, you even adopted the habit of drinking lemon water first thing in the morning during your detox phases, until your stomach rebelliously revolted with bouts of acid reflux.
It’s not like you leave them out at room temperature. You know very well that they wither, soften, and dry out when exposed to light or heat. This deterioration speeds up even more when you pile them up. That’s why you always store them in the vegetable drawer, trying to space them out as much as possible – they have to make room for the neighbors, after all… But despite these precautions, you struggle to keep them fresh and juicy for more than three weeks. When you finally decide to use one, you find that mold, quicker than you, has beaten you to it. Frustrating.
Yet, there’s a remarkably effective technique to keep lemons fresh up to three times longer than in the vegetable drawer. This tip was recently shared on Instagram by Cécile, known as @macuisineenthousiaste. According to this zero-waste expert, you should always store them in the fridge… but submerged in a glass jar. “Lemons like to stay moist and start to mold as soon as they dry out. Their tiny pores allow water to escape easily. By keeping them in water, they’ll stay beautiful!”, explains the chef and content creator, and this for about three months. A considerable extension that at least gives you time to squeeze your brain for lemon-based ideas!
So now, there are no more excuses for letting your lemons perish in the back of the fridge! With this simple yet ingenious method, say goodbye to waste and hello to spontaneous lemonades, enhanced vinaigrettes, and last-minute tangy pies. All you need to do is grab a jar, make some space on a shelf, and dunk your citrus fruits into their new pool. Your lemons have never been better off…
