This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Working from home has become routine for many employees, which can sometimes lead to tax deductions. Here’s what you need to know.
Since the health crisis triggered by COVID-19, remote working has gradually become a norm in many companies. In France, over one in five private-sector employees now work from home, typically around two days a week, according to Insee. This work arrangement, supported by numerous corporate agreements, also incurs specific expenses. Sometimes companies help cover these costs by providing a fixed allowance, reimbursing part of the internet bill, or covering the cost of a home electrical check-up. If you did not receive this allowance from your employer in 2024, you can declare these teleworking-related expenses yourself to benefit from a tax deduction. This is done directly on your tax return.
What is the Amount to Deduct for Teleworking Expenses?
By opting for the deduction of actual expenses, you can remove from your taxable income an amount of 2.70 euros per teleworked day, which equals about 59.40 euros per month for 22 remote workdays, up to a maximum of 626.40 euros per year, according to the tax office website. You can also declare the exact amount of your expenses if it benefits you more. Regardless, you must keep receipts to prove these expenses.
If you prefer not to declare your actual expenses, telework-related costs cannot be deducted. However, you will benefit from the standard 10% deduction automatically applied by the tax authorities to the “Wages and Salaries” section of your declaration.
Which Expenses Can Be Deducted When Teleworking?
If you regularly work from home, be aware that certain expenses can be included in your tax return. This includes both professional equipment (computer, printer, office supplies) and costs related to the personal use of your home for professional purposes, such as electricity, heating, or internet subscription. The form “2041-GP – allowances for employment expenses” provides details on the nature of telework expenses that can be deducted from taxes. Additionally, other professional expenses such as home-to-work travel (up to 40 km) or meals related to your activity can also be considered.
How to Deduct These Actual Expenses During Tax Declaration?
To declare your telework expenses on your taxes, you need to enter them in boxes 1AK to 1DK of your tax return. These boxes are located in step 3 of the online form, under the “Wages and Salaries” section.
