Relocating with three or more children can significantly impact your budget. An assistance program, updated on April 1, 2025, could offer some financial relief. Here’s how you can access this help.
As families grow, so does the need for more space, leading many parents to move to a larger home when welcoming a new child. This can be an expensive endeavor, but financial aid is available to help offset the costs: the moving allowance. This benefit is provided by the Caf or the MSA under specific conditions.
What are the requirements to qualify for the moving allowance?
To be eligible for the moving allowance, several criteria must be met, starting with the number of dependent children. This Caf aid is awarded to parents with at least three children born or expected.
If you have only two children but are pregnant with a third, you can apply if your due date is within 6 months following your move. Therefore, the move must occur between the end of your third month of pregnancy and the day before your youngest child’s second birthday. To receive the moving allowance, you must also be receiving the Personalized Housing Assistance (APL) or the Family Housing Allowance (ALF).
How much is the moving allowance?
The moving allowance covers the actual expenses incurred in relocating, such as hiring a moving company. The amount of aid depends on the number of children in your household. Starting from April 1, 2025, it is capped at $1,138.49 for families with three dependent children, plus an additional $94.97 for each additional child.
What are the steps to apply?
To apply for the moving allowance, you can proceed online via the Caf website or send the cerfa form n°11363*04 by mail to your MSA fund, along with proof of incurred expenses. This could include the moving company’s invoice or, if you moved the boxes yourself, receipts for vehicle rental, gasoline, or toll charges. Remember, you have a six-month window to submit your application!
When is the moving allowance paid?
Once your application and supporting documents have been submitted and processed, the allowance is typically paid the month after moving, in one lump sum. However, it’s wise to check with your Caf for specific details. If you’re in a precarious financial situation, you might also request an advance upon presenting a quote.
How often can you receive the moving allowance?
If you moved last year, for instance, you can apply again if you still meet the eligibility criteria and if your youngest child, qualifying you for the allowance, has not yet turned two years old.
Moving Allowance and Employer Contributions
Be aware that some companies offer to reimburse moving expenses in the event of a job transfer, and may also provide a day or two of moving leave. It’s worthwhile to review your company’s collective agreement to see if you are entitled to these benefits.
