The ASF is designed to support single-parent families, who are among the most vulnerable to economic hardship in France.
The ASF is a financial aid designed for parents who are solely responsible for raising their children. Single-parent families, often facing economic challenges, can use this support to more easily manage essential daily expenses.
What are the eligibility criteria for ASF?
The Family Support Allowance (ASF) is intended to assist the parent who single-handedly raises their child, due to situations like separation or death, or if the other parent has not acknowledged the child. This benefit can also be granted if there has been no child support payment for at least one month, or if the amount of child support is too low, specifically less than 200.78 euros per month.
To qualify for ASF, one must be residing alone in France, with at least one child under 20 years of age. Unlike other family benefits, ASF eligibility does not depend on the remaining parent’s income or the person who has taken in the child. However, it is important to note that ASF does not cover the maintenance obligations of a parent who refuses to pay child support; if the aid is advanced when child support is not paid by the other parent, that parent may face a recovery procedure by the agency advancing the funds.
What is the amount of the Family Support Allowance in 2026?
The Family Support Allowance amounts to 200.78 euros per month per child for a single parent, or 267.63 euros for a person who has taken in a child. For those receiving a child support amount less than 200.78 euros, ASF is then paid as a supplement to reach this amount. For instance, if you receive only 70 euros from your ex-partner, the Caf will then pay you an additional 130.78 euros.
How to apply for the Family Support Allowance?
To receive the Family Support Allowance, you need to fill out the ASF application form (cerfa n°12038*03) along with your situation statement and required documents (copy of the judgment, family record book, etc.).
Can ASF be combined with RSA?
Yes, it is possible to combine the Family Support Allowance with the Active Solidarity Income (RSA). This social benefit can also be combined with the family supplement, maternity leave, the choice of childcare mode supplement (CMG), the birth premium, and PreParE.
What is the duration of the Family Support Allowance?
- If no child support has been set and you have no court decision, ASF can be paid for 4 months. To extend it, it is necessary to take action with the family affairs judge to set a child support amount. The Family Support Allowance will be maintained until its characterization.
- If child support has been established, ASF is paid as an advance. Your Caf or MSA acts on your behalf to recover this support if the other parent does not fully pay the set child support. It may also initiate a recovery procedure against the other parent to recover up to two years of unpaid child support.
- If the other parent is unable to meet their maintenance obligation (due to insolvency, unemployment, RSA, etc.), the Caf will review their situation and based on the findings, inform you whether you need to initiate procedures to establish child support.
Until what age is ASF paid?
ASF can be paid until the child turns 20. Payments stop the month of the child’s 20th birthday, even if they were born at the end of the month. However, payments may cease sooner if you no longer assume the emotional, educational, and financial responsibility for the child, or if you start living as a couple again (unless you have taken in a child who is not your own).
Can ASF be paid retroactively?
Some benefits from the Caf can be paid within a two-year period from the date you are entitled to them. This includes the Family Support Allowance and child benefits. Thus, if you did not apply in time, do not worry, you will still receive the benefit payments.
