Every year since 1998, the Christmas bonus has helped millions of households during the holiday season. Who is eligible for it? What requirements must be met?

Last year, nearly 2.3 million French residents received the Christmas bonus. This financial aid, typically disbursed around December 15, helps cover holiday season expenses. It’s awarded to certain recipients who meet specific criteria, primarily being recipients of minimum social benefits. The Family Allowances Fund (Caisse d’allocations familiales, Caf) is responsible for the payments, but it’s not the only one…

What are the Christmas bonus amounts for 2024 depending on family size?

In recent years, the amount of the Christmas bonus has remained unchanged. So far, the government has made no announcements about a possible increase. In 2024, the basic amount is expected to still be 152.45 euros for a single person. However, the amount varies depending on family composition. Here are the detailed amounts of the Christmas bonus:

Family situation (RSA) If you are single If you are a couple
No children 152.45 euros 228.67 euros
1 child 228.67 euros 274.41 euros
2 children 274.41 euros 320.14 euros
3 children 335.39 euros 381.12 euros
4 children 396.37 euros 442.10 euros
Per additional child 60.98 euros 60.98 euros

Who is eligible for the Christmas bonus?

To receive the Christmas bonus, the main requirement is to be a recipient of the following minimum social benefits: active solidarity income (RSA), specific solidarity allowance (ASS), or equivalent retirement allowance (AER). Other minimum social benefits are also eligible through the Unemployment Agency. Your family situation is also considered, whether you are living alone, as a couple, or with dependent children.

Christmas Bonus or “end-of-year exceptional aid” paid by the Unemployment Agency

In addition to the CAF and MSA, the Christmas bonus is also paid by the Unemployment Agency to certain recipients. If your entitlement to one of the following allowances is active for November or December 2024, you will then receive the Christmas bonus from the Unemployment Agency. Note that its amount is fixed, amounting to 152.45 euros for metropolitan France and DOM regions and 76.22 euros for Mayotte, regardless of your family situation.

  • Specific solidarity allowance (ASS)
  • Specific solidarity allowance for training (ASS-F)
  • Equivalent retirement allowance (AER)
  • Public internship remuneration (RPS)
  • Unemployment training remuneration (RFPE)
  • Support for business creation and takeover (ACRE-ASS)

However, if you are already receiving the unemployment return-to-work allowance (ARE) from the Unemployment Agency, you are not eligible for the Christmas bonus, even if you receive the minimum ARE payments.

What are the steps to receive the Christmas bonus?

To request or receive the Christmas bonus, no specific actions are required. If you are eligible and receive the RSA, the Christmas bonus is automatically paid by the CAF or MSA. If you receive the ASS, AER, or a flat-rate bonus for returning to work, the Unemployment Agency will handle the payment. In all cases, the disbursement of the Christmas bonus is automatically made to the bank accounts of the eligible individuals. It is also worth noting that the Christmas bonus is not taxable.
