This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
As temperatures drop, roads transform into icy rinks due to snow and ice. While most people turn to deicing salt, there is another product, cheaper and possibly even more effective, available in any supermarket.
Every winter, drivers face the same challenge. When temperatures dip below freezing, roads can become dangerously slippery, primarily due to ice formed from snow or frozen rain on the asphalt, posing a severe threat to vehicle safety. In such conditions, one might find themselves stuck with spinning wheels or, worse, lose complete control of their vehicle. Unfortunately, snow tires or chains only partially solve the problem.
We’re all familiar with using road salt, employed by both municipalities and private individuals to secure roads, sidewalks, and driveways. Salt helps prevent water from refreezing and improves tire traction on pavement. However, its effectiveness can vary with temperature or the amount applied. But there’s an overlooked product that could help drivers avoid precarious situations. It’s cheaper than road salt and much more common; many even have it at home without realizing its potential utility in their vehicles.
The product in question is cat litter! The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, advises spreading cat litter or gravel on driveways and garage entries to reduce the risk of slipping on compacted snow, a situation currently similar in both the UK and France. Surprisingly, cat litter provides strong traction by increasing friction between the tires and the road surface, and its moisture-absorbing properties prevent re-freezing. Unlike traditional road salt, cat litter does not freeze, which is a significant advantage in very low temperatures, especially in mountainous regions where temperatures can plummet. Additionally, cat litter is generally inexpensive, with prices starting around 2 euros for a 10-liter bag.
Therefore, one can spread cat litter in front of their house as a preventative measure or even after ice has formed. The Met Office also recommends keeping a bag in the trunk of your car, enabling you to get unstuck if you find yourself spinning your wheels in the middle of a road. Simply sprinkle some cat litter in front of the drive wheels, and you should be able to move again.
